Hazel Broom - Primary Health Care Councillor.

Psychological Therapy service for clients aims to provide an opportunity for clients to work towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way. Thus improving the quality of normal daily living.

Occasionally in our lives we may need some help to sort out a problem or difficulty, or we may be experiencing feelings that concern us. Counselling is a service to help when patients are having difficulty sorting out problems and feelings of concern, to help them understand what is happening as well as offering support through difficult periods in ones life. Therapists will not only listen to you but we will help you to understand your feelings, thoughts and beliefs so you can understand them and find ways of making changes. Counselling cannot solve all your problems and sometimes it is not appropriate.

These are some of the examples of the issues that clients bring to counselling;

    * Anxiety / Stress
    * Phobias & Panic Disorders
    * Depression
    * Post Natal Depression
    * Disordered Eating & Eating Disorders - e.g. bulimia
    * Domestic Violence - Physical, Emotional/Psychological, Sexual, Verbal Abuse
    * Childhood Abuse – Sexual, Physical, Emotional, Verbal

The first consultation is a Clinical Assessment Consultation, it is a session which informs you generally about the approaches used in Primary Care Mental Health and the nature of confidentiality. This is normally followed by 8 sessions of management. It is essential that clients give at least 48 hours if they are unable to attend as there is a significant pressure on the service.

Guided Self Help is best suited to those clients/patients who would like to explore, for themselves using bibliography and the support of a Graduate Mental Health Worker the issues that cause mild distress. It requires commitment and some self discipline. The approach is mostly based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and/or Brief Solution Focused Therapy. It is not counselling, although active listening is a fundamental tool in this approach.

Like counselling, Graduate Mental Health workers work to a code of practice and respect client confidentiality unless there is a risk to themselves and/or others, including children.
