Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception uses a progesterone pill (Levonelle 1500) which is effective up to 72 hours following unprotected intercourse (it is however most effective in the first 24 hours).
WHERE YOU CAN OBTAIN EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION:
-It is available free of charge from the Practice Nurses at the Health Centre without an appointment, for any women of any age.
-Over the counter at pharmacies (free for under 19's).
-The Sidmouth Hospital Minor Injuries Unit, open 7 days a week 10am - 6pm.
-From your GP.
-The School Nurse at Sidmouth College on Mondays (during lunch break or any other time by request).
Levonelle 1500 should not be used as regular contraception and it is strongly advised that you attend the Health Centre at a later time to receive ongoing contraception. The other emergency contraception involves inserting a coil, and offers the only real advantage of effectiveness - up to 5 days following unprotected intercourse.
